What Are Scleral Lenses and Who Are They For?

Scleral lenses are large, gas-permeable contact lenses that vault over the entire corneal surface and rest gently on the sclera. Unlike standard contacts, scleral lenses hold a reservoir of fluid between the lens and the eye, which helps keep your eyes comfortable and protected.

Scleral lenses are often the gold standard for:

  • Keratoconus and corneal ectasia

  • Other irregular corneal conditions

  • Severe dry eye syndrome

  • Post-surgical corneas (LASIK, corneal transplants)

  • Pellucid marginal degeneration

  • Ocular surface disease

  • High refractive errors that glasses or regular contacts can’t correct.

Why Are Scleral Lenses Ideal for Keratoconus and Corneal Disease?

Keratoconus and related corneal diseases cause the surface of the eye to become irregular, leading to blurred, distorted vision - even with glasses or soft contacts. Scleral lenses create a new, perfectly smooth optical surface, significantly improving clarity and reducing visual distortions.

But not all scleral lenses are created equal. Our office fits premium, custom-designed scleral lenses with Higher Order Aberration (HOA) correction, powered by OVITZ technology, to take your vision to the next level.

The Power of the OVITZ xwave Aberrometer

If you’ve been told that your vision can’t improve any further, it may be because higher order aberrations (HOAs) haven’t been fully addressed. HOAs are tiny optical imperfections in the eye that cause symptoms like:

  • Glare

  • Halos (especially around lights at night)

  • Starbursts

  • Reduced night vision

  • “Ghosting” or blurry images

Our practice utilizes the OVITZ xwave Aberrometer for advanced eye mapping and measurement. This technology allows us to design custom scleral lenses that correct HOAs rather than just basic refractive errors.

The Next Generation in Custom Scleral Lenses

OVITZ-Added Lenses are custom scleral lenses that feature advanced optics designed to correct these higher order aberrations. The technology works by compensating for the irregular way light enters your eye. With OVITZ HOA Optics, patients experience sharper, clearer, and more comfortable vision, especially in challenging situations such as nighttime or when exposed to bright lights.

Experience the Difference with Advanced Scleral Lenses

If you have keratoconus or another corneal condition and have not reached your desired level of vision with glasses or standard contact lenses, our advanced scleral lens options may be the answer.
